Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys: Drawings

We are excited to announce a small selection of 24 drawings from the ongoing pictorial encyclopedia of Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys available for purchase for the very first time.

The series Das Wunder des Lebens (The Wonder of Life) contains hundreds drawings that capture everything the modern world has to offer, from maps and city views to cars, airplanes, and the ordinary objects that fill our daily lives. Yet unlike conventional pictorial dictionaries, there is no symbolic system that organises these images. We encounter laundry bags and paint buckets alongside a nun, a man in a hat standing before a double window, a shy animal with thick fur, and an ornate Victorian breakfast table. Juxtapositions are flattened into a single plane of looking; normality becomes a farce. Everything is exposed to everyone, and everything becomes equal. It is, in a sense, an encyclopedia of inspiration born as much from observation as from emotion.

The project was created during an intense three-month period in the winter of 2009, when the artists locked themselves in the basement of their Brussels studio. Working from existing photographs, they placed each image on a lightbox and traced the drawings by hand, transforming the world around them into a vast, unstable archive of outlined memory.
